Network marketing, or MLM (multi-level marketing), is a great business for earning residual income. The industry has many legitimate companies to help people, even if you have a tight budget. Just like anything else, though, network marketing also has some people that just want your money and are not interested in your success. I hope to give you some insight on how to build your business right.

I'm Don Servais, Jr. and I've been living in Texas for over 20 years. I've been in the television business at several stations as a Producer/Director of newscasts and commercial production since 1980. It's been a great career and often challenging.

My wife and I are putting three kids through private school and college and we have quite a few years left to support them. We accumulated a lot of debt in the early years and found ourselves in a financial pinch. The television industry has been finding ways to automate and downsize staff in recent years. People are spending more time online than watching television, so viewership has been eroding. Fewer sales means fewer jobs.

Make Money While You Sleep

I liked the idea of making money while I slept. I saw a presentation of making money on vending machines which fit this idea. The major drawback was traveling around town a couple times a week to collect the money. I wanted something that I wouldn't have to travel a lot and work around picking up kids from school.

The first network marketing presentation I saw, I really liked the product. I was sure I would get a lot of people interested in it. I loved the concept of residual income which is how you really make your money in network marketing. I was determined to make it work.

That determination lasted another 7 years. I had some moderate success, but I did not blow any doors off. I didn't have any money to spend on the business, so I did as many FREE things to promote my business as possible. What little money I did have, I would spend it on business leads. These leads were people who were supposedly interested in a business opportunity. Even though I had some success with it, the majority of the people I called had no interest in building a business from home.

I was getting behind on bills and I needed to make some money without spending any. That's when I started doing some mystery shopping. Mystery shopping was a temporary fix, because you will not make a lot of money with it over the long haul. The great appeal was that I didn't spend a dime to start mystery shopping. I had a computer and a printer/FAX machine. My digital camera came in handy also. That's all you really need to make money in mystery shopping.

Video mystery shopping in particular was a little more lucrative. I would wear a hidden camera to assigned locations and earned twice as much as the written assignments. The only way you can earn residual income with mystery shopping is with several companies that will pay a fee for referrals. I'll give you names of mystery shopping companies on this website to make your search easier.

Then, I saw the light

What changed my fortunes was an article by Ann Sieg titled The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing . After years of wondering how to effectively build my business, I learned some of the tricks of the trade in this FREE controversial eBook. I found out how the gurus do it without spending a lot of money. I now have people come to me and ask me about my business.

I don't chase anyone and I don't have to convince anybody that my business is not a pyramid scheme.
