Why Lead Verification Is
So Important To You

Lead verification is something every lead generation company should follow up on. When a person fills out an online application to receive more information, many companies will call that person to verify their interest. Double opt-in features are used for lead verification as well. This person is considered a fresh lead after they submit their information.

As a buyer of leads in the past, I had my doubts about the quality of the leads I received. One day, I realized my biggest fear.

I was searching the internet and ran across an ad that would give me $50 off on one of my favorite restaurants. I thought, OK, let’s give this a shot.

When I clicked on the banner ad, it asked me for my personal information. I entered a slightly different spelling to my name to see if I would get on a list. I gave them my home phone number.

The next page took me to a whole list of advertisements to look at. They wanted me to choose Submit or Skip to each ad. I clicked on Skip to each one of them. That sent me to another page of more advertisements. I clicked Skip on all of those. This happened again and again and again.

A page came up and said “you must choose one” of these ads in order to proceed. I really didn’t want anything, so I just clicked OK on something. I chose an ad for online education.

That was the only item I clicked OK on and it took me to an application. I had to fill it out or I would lose my chance for a $50 coupon. I submitted that information and was presented with another page of advertisements to look at. It looked like the same page I already submitted Skip to before. But, something else happened seconds after I submitted the application.

I got a phone call from the online university. They were excited that I was interested in learning more about their opportunity. I told them “No” I have no interest at all in your program. I was trying to get a coupon online and had to say Yes to something.

If there was any lead verification at all, I should have been deleted right away.

Instead, that was the first of many calls I received in the months to come.

Two major thoughts came out of this experience.

1. The people who contacted me probably paid a lot of money to get me as a lead. I'm sorry I wasted their money.

2. How many leads like this did I pay for over the years? How many are being sold by the lead generation companies today?

My name should have been removed after the first phone call when I told the person that I had no interest. I'm sure some lead generation companies would have removed it. However, I would hate to guess the real percentage of leads just like mine that are sold over and over again.

At that point, I ended my pursuit of the $50 coupon. I'm sure had I filled out a couple more applications, I may have earned the coupon. This whole process took 20 minutes of my time already. I didn't have hours to spend doing any more. I learned a lot from that experiment.

Be aware of this the next time you're looking at buying leads from a company.
