You Have A Choice For Your Natural Gas and Electricity Providers
Natural gas and electricity providers have been dominated over the years by large distributors across the United States. In most areas, people were given only one choice for their natural gas and electricity providers. It was mandated that way over 100 years ago by the federal government to allow private companies to build the infrastructure needed.
Today, these large distributors, otherwise known as your LOCAL UTILITY COMPANY, are seen as a monopoly. For the past two decades, the government has gone through a deregulation process and welcomed private investors to get into the energy business. The main idea being that less regulation will mean more growth and productivity for our economy.
It also gives you a choice when choosing your natural gas and electricity providers.
Deregulation has allowed more of these private investors, known as Retail Energy Providers (REP), to open up for business and allow competitive pricing and service. If you're dissatisfied with one company, you can sign up with another company.
You have more options to choose from instead of pleading your case to one company that will more than likely ignore your concerns.
FIXED RATE OPTION
One big difference for these REPs is that some offer a fixed rate option. Fixed rates are generally not offered by the large distributors. This means that your monthly bill can be the same amount every month, no matter how much more energy you use or don't use.
For consumers, this can lead to peace of mind. No more guessing games of what your energy bill will be next month.
In some cases, you may even pay less over an entire 12-month period.
It's important to understand that these competitive companies are not rebuilding power plants and setting up new power lines.
The difference is that a REP can purchase the natural gas and electricity from the open market at a wholesale rate. Much of that power will come from the same sources that they have always traveled. They sell it retail to households and businesses.
The local utility will still be the company checking the meters and the ones to call on for power outages and other repairs.
One thing that the REPs will stress is that when you switch your service, you probably won't notice a difference. You won't notice when one company switches to the other.
Not every state in the country is deregulated for natural gas and electricity providers. Some states have both, while others have one or the other. A few states have neither deregulated.

With competition among retail energy providers, the large distributors are put in check when it comes to billing. Some years ago, one of my electricity providers did some creative billing that got me and a lot of other consumers angry.
